Group Coordinator: Mary White (click to contact)
When

Weekly on Tuesdays at 10.30am (but this can change due to the weather).
Where

By the Clock Tower in Caledonian Park (Market Road, off the Caledonian Road).

Our pétanque group has about 18 members signed up to the group and there are normally about 12 of us there on any week.

The group has come together really well in such a short space of time. All are beginners (more or less!) but are learning and improving quickly and having a lot of fun along the way. But it is never too late to join: new members are always very welcome and easily assimilated.

The venue is proving very successful. It is a lovely setting. We have plenty of interested passers-by stop to watch and chat and sometimes join in for a while too! The council has just resurfaced some of the area that we use which initially made for a rather dusty experience in the wind, but this should soon settle down and make for a great playing surface.

Petanque groupMany of us just enjoy playing for fun but there are some who have braved a couple of competitions this year. An international competition called The Londonaise was held in Barnard Park and we entered 3 teams. Although our success was limited we did learn a lot from more experienced players. This inspired us to enter the First U3A Petanque weekend tournament held last month on Hayling Island. Out of 42 teams one of ours managed to reach the final of the Gold division but just missed out on the prize. Regardless of the outcome of the competition we all agreed we had had a great time with a lot of laughter.

So if you fancy giving it a try, do please come along. We have some spare boules for you to borrow so that you can try it out before you decide whether to make the commitment of buying your own. It is a great way to get some fresh air, hopefully some sunshine, gentle exercise, a bit of competition, learn some new skills, meet new people and most importantly have some fun!
